Get the Facts

One in every three women in the U.S. has been, or is, in an abusive relationship.

Fifty thousand women around the world were killed by partners or family members in 2017 alone.

Twenty people in the United States are assaulted every minute by their partners.

About 4,000 women die each year due to domestic violence.

Over 10 million people per year experience intimate partner violence.

Approximately 40% of women killed by their abuser sought help in the 2 years before death.

50% of women seen in emergency departments report a history of abuse.

At least 5 million acts of domestic violence occur annually to women aged 18 years and older.

Abusive men come from all economic classes, races, religions, and occupations. They are often seen as a “good provider” and a respected member of his church and community.

Abuse victims between ages 35 and 49 run the highest risk of being killed.

Children who grow up in violent homes are more likely to develop alcohol and drug addictions.

Women’s greatest risk of violence comes from intimate partners – a current or former husband or boyfriend.

1 out of 3 women is a victim of domestic abuse.

Teresa Yohman
Terri Yohman, Director, Office of Marriage and Family Ministry, Diocese of Cleveland

A note from Terri:

“My passion for this work comes from both professional experience and personal encounters. I’ve seen the pain abuse causes, and the healing that’s possible when we respond with compassion and courage.

We can make a difference. We can bring hope to survivors, reduce shame, and even save lives. We can help shape a new generation’s understanding of love and break harmful cycles.

It’s a myth that abuse doesn’t happen in the Church. Domestic violence occurs in our pews, and we need to be ready to recognize it and respond. Awareness must go beyond just training staff and volunteers — it needs to reach the whole parish community.”

Their work is bringing about a powerful and impactful healing in many lives. As individuals receive formation and healing through the ministry, they are supported by a community and accompanied into deeper relationship with Jesus.
